So here's a topic for you, someone I know that went shopping for a suit for an upcoming wedding, went into a store (the store name I won't mention) and obviously asked for some help regarding sizes and what would look good.
All seems normal, until the shop assistant starts saying things like "oh you have a really small neck", "oh you have really small shoulders", "oh you have really big thighs".
I don't know about you, but isn't the person helping you buy clothing be more careful with the comments they make regarding the way a customer looks?
When we go shopping, especially for people that are not comfortable with their bodies, we try on clothes, maybe many times, which can be a struggle to find something that fits right and looks good. The last thing you need is the shop assistant, who is meant to be helping you, adding further to your insecurities.
Just to give some clarity to the situation to defend the shop assistant, he was only 18 years old, only been in the job for a few months so I understand that he didn't know the extent of his actions. However there were more senior staff who should have been there to coach him correctly how to speak to customers.
Businesses in the fashion industry should a lot more sensitivity around this area. All of our bodies are different shapes and sizes and there's nothing wrong with that. They should not be paving the way to what neck is too small, or to whose thighs are too big etc. They don't have the right to judge or decide what is the norm.
Let me know about your thoughts and even your experiences whilst shopping.
